@Stanley Jenkins: Thanks ever so much for your kind contribution to this very controversial topic. Spanking, corporal punishment, or whatever we choose to call it should(as you rightly put it) be the last resort at disciplining a child. Children in a lot of cases do not know better and should be spoken to about wrong doings, or disciplined in other ways like implementing time-outs, depriving them of their favorite tv program or video game( tv in general) for a while to reinforce the point being made, or make them realize the unnacceptable nature of what they might have done. Spanking has to be the very last option(and the parent can let the child realize that it is indeed). When we say corporal punishment, (as mentioned in the above blog)their is indeed a thin line between it and child abuse. No sane parent would want to see their child in pain or nursing a bruise or wound as a result of corporal punishment hence the reason why a "good word" will always be the way to go. Some of us of African or afrocarribean heritage were not so lucky as to have child services etc querying our parents for disciplining us when we were stubborn, that alone struck the fear of God in us and kept us on the good side. Yet again, just like there are two sides to a coin, corporal punishment did drive a couple of children to "far extremes" because they got used to it. My opinion? understand what style suits your child, and implement it. Thanks again for your input :)

I have always wanted to know if all traditional and ancient African societies engaged in some form of corporal punishment or not. I think only as a last resort should some form of visceral restraint be employed in the disciplining of a child, but ONLY as a last resort. Personally I only had to physically discipline my son once and my daughter several times and that only a swat on the butt. I'm hopeful that such won't be necessary in the future.

"Even though there has been(and are still) grievances based on history with regards to forceful removal of Africans from Africa, fight for rights of Africans etc, we will always carry the prefix 'Africa' or 'Afro' as a header denoting our identity because that is who we are, and that is who we will always be."

I posted a comment on another blog on this topic and welcome your feedback:
