Occupy Nigeria: The oil subsidy removal protests
Since the discovery of crude oil at Oloibiri, Bayelsa State, Nigeria in 1956, and Nigeria joining the world oil producers in 1958, there has been nothing but corruption, exploitation and greed plaguing the country. On Sunday the 1st of January 2012 just as as the world woke up to a new year, Nigerians woke up to the news of the removal of oil subsidy which increased the pump price of petrol from ₦65 (0.26p) per litre to ₦141 (0.60p which is a 116.9% increase). Also worth knowing is the fact that this amount could be as much as ₦200 (0.80p) per litre at the black market for most Nigerians. This increase in pump price has not been cushioned by an equal (and reasonable) increase in the minimum wage which is presently at ₦18,000 (£71) per month.

This has lead up to the present ongoing oil subsidy removal protest which has gradually but constantly spread across Nigeria and in the past few days across the Atlantic into the Diaspora as a sign that the masses have had about enough of being taken for a ride. Maybe it`s high time the The president “Goodluck”(yeah right) Jonathan, Okonjo iweala et al start walking the walk and talking the talk, lead by example not by instruction.
As usual, your comments on this post are expected and will be appreciated.

this evil men in the government just sit like gods, and throw instructions,to kill the masses, all because of satisfying their own greedy evil desires.and this stupid people calling themselves country leaders are common human beings like us,they’ve all found themselves living on this earth, like we all are living.they claim to be smart and enthroning power over us(Nigerians).these bastards are fellow men like us,and these bastards and fools have been cheating we the Nigeria masses for decades. We must war for our rights and obligation.Good luck Jonathan was just an irony, and now the disguised has been revealed to Nigerians,he a(bad-luck).Nigerian government is no different with common thieves in the Nigerian society, that Nigerian communities beat down and burn alive for stealing.Only GOD in heaven will help us all.
@G-Ruling: We are all aggrieved no doubt! Whether we live in or outside of the country, we all have ties one way or the other so it affects all and sundry. The “oil subsidy ideaology” itself is a good concept if well implemented. I mean look at other countries that have adopted it, they have equally reduced the effect by balancing wages against inflation to create a cushion-effect. You do not have to be an economist to deduce the relationship between inflation and wages! It`s not rocket science. The problems created over the years cannot be eradicated overnight. It is just plain unacceptable that while the government officials(senate members to be more precise) are busy lining their pockets with wads of naira, dollars and pounds, the average citizen finds it hard to eat on a “less than $2 a day wage”. NOT ACCEPTABLE I`M AFRAID!
